Levant Lure Journey. Day 4: Dead Sea - Ma'in - Kerak, Jordan

Our plan for the fourth day was to travel south to the Wadi Musa. The journey took us through the Jordan Valley Highway, which offers breathtaking views of the Dead Sea. Exiting onto Ma'in Street, we stopped at the Dead Sea Museum. The entrance fee was 5 JD; however, the museum was empty, lacking even staff. There was a lovely restaurant with a lake view.

From the museum, we headed to the Ma'in Hot Springs, which was only 5 kilometers away. It was a series of hot mineral springs and waterfalls. Entry fees for Ma'in Hot Springs with public access cost 10 JD for the main thermal pools and waterfalls. We spent more than an hour soaking in the water.

Back onto the Jordan Valley Highway, we continued south until reaching the end of the Dead Sea. We stopped briefly for pictures. Little did we know, while in the museum, the Dead Sea was facing a severe ecological disaster, primarily a rapid decline in water level and the resulting formation of dangerous sinkholes.

I would say Kerak Castle was the main highlight for the day. We had a late lunch near this attraction. After lunch, we spent almost 2 hours exploring the castle. The Crusaders built Kerak Castle in the 1140s as a stronghold on the King's Highway. It controlled trade routes between Damascus and Egypt and became a major battleground between Crusader forces and Saladin before falling to Muslim rule in 1188.

We only arrived at the Petra Plaza hotel, our home for two nights, after dusk. Originally, we planned to experience "Petra by Night"; however, my wife told me it requires many steps to reach the Treasury. The tour will follow a glowing path of 1500 candles through the Siq canyon of Petra. Since visiting the vast complex of Petra requires a lot of energy, we passed on the "Petra by Night" and rested for the day.
